Student Expectations

All Northglenn Middle School students are expected to follow the 4 R’s; Ready, Responsibility, Respect and Rigor.

What does that look like in an instrumental music class?

The “4R’s” Rehearsal Procedures

Ready

Be at all rehearsals and performances on time…which means early! There’s a difference between being

present and being ready.

Be in your seat, with instrument/music ready to make music, by one minute after the bell.

Have all required materials at all rehearsals

Student has his or her instrument in working condition.

Student has all necessary supplies for their instrument –

(valve oil, cork grease, cleaning swab).

Student (woodwinds only) has a good, working reed.

Student has all music and books for rehearsal.

Student has a pencil.

Responsibility

Put away instruments and/or music in the proper storage area at the end of every rehearsal.

Please do not ask to leave class for any reason unless you are ill and need to go home.

Keep your mouth free from gum, candy, cough drops, food, etc.

Take care of bathroom needs during passing period, students are not allowed to use the bathroom

during class.

If your instrument is not working properly please bring it to my attention after rehearsal.

If you are not able to participate in the rehearsal (e.g. forgotten instrument, injured), please see

Mr. Stopperan immediately when you enter the room.

Respect

Do not play your instrument before rehearsal begins.

Play assigned part every time conductor asks for you to play.

Stop immediately when the conductor stops.

Raise your hand if you have an appropriate question.

Stay in your seat unless you have permission to do otherwise.

Do not touch what is not yours.

Respect the rights of others to learn, and the teacher to teach by not causing an interruption to the rehearsal.

The bell does not dismiss the class. The director dismisses the class.

Rigor

Do your best in rehearsal every day.

Attend all rehearsals and concerts

Curriculum, Standards and Grading

The Northglenn Middle School Music Department bases its classroom instruction on the Adams Twelve Five Star Schools Music Curriculum Framework. The Music Curriculum Framework is aligned with the Colorado Model Content Standards for Music. Grading is based on summative assessments according to the standards. The percentages will be a weighted grade.

Grading will be based on the following weighted percentages -

Standard I – 30% (15/15)

Students will understand and participate in the process of musical performance.

Weekly Participation Rubric – (15%)

Performance Participation – (15%)

Band is a performance-based class.  Therefore, attendance at performances is required.  The only excused absences from a performance are:

1. Serious illness -A parent or guardian must notify me regarding his/her condition before the concert.  An excused absence from school the day of a performance constitutes an excused absence and does not require further notification.

2. Special circumstances - The student must discuss their conflict at least one week in advance with their teacher and the student may be excused at their discretion.

                * We will always work with students/parents on conflicts with our concerts.  Although                                      we operate under the basic premise that “school should come first”, we realize that there                                          are other important things in the lives of our students.  Please remember that only                                                               excused absences can be made up.

                * Concerts - Our concerts begin at 7:01 P.M. unless stated differently on the school schedule.  We want the

students to be at NGMS by 6:31 P.M. for warm-up, set-up and tuning.  Concert dress for ALL performing groups will be white dress shirt/blouse, black pants/long skirt and dark shoes, black socks, girls dark hoes, absolutely no jeans.  We want our groups to look as nice as possible.  Contact Mr. Stopperan for questions or concerns.

* Grading Criteria:

Arrive at designated time.

Wearing appropriate, required concert dress.

Following 4 R’s when performing and when not performing.

Performing to the best of student’s ability.

Completing the follow-up self critique or ensemble critique.

Standard II – 35%

Students develop instrumental techniques necessary for individual and group experience.

Playing Tests –

Playing tests will be assigned throughout the year to evaluate a student’s individual

progress.  These will be either: in front of the class or one on one.  Each test will be graded on a 4 point rubric. Students have up to the end of each trimester to make up any playing tests and can take them as many times as they need to until a perfect score is reached.

Standard III – 15%

Students develop musical literacy and independence through the learning of rhythm, melody, harmony, symbols and terminology.

Music Theory Tests –

Music Theory is the aspect of music that includes the reading and writing of music. This is an essential aspect of being able to perform music. Students will be evaluated through formal written tests on their ability to read and write all aspects of music for their instrument.

Standard IV – 5%

Students will engage in creative self-expression through musical interpretation, improvisation, and composition.

Student Compositions -

As students gain the ability to read and write music symbols and terminology, improvise on their instrument and suggest interpretations, they will begin primary compositional techniques.  Students will be evaluated by defined criteria for each composition.

Standard V – 10%

Students will develop a historical understanding of music utilizing materials which represent diverse musical and cultural styles.

Music Listening Tests -

Students will explore and discover a variety of cultures and musical styles through the music that is learned in class. Students will study important composers and their compositions starting with the Baroque Period through the 20th Century.

Standard VI – 5%

Students develop the ability to make aesthetic judgments based on critical listening and analysis.

Concert Critique

Students will be required to attend at least one concert per trimester and complete a concert critique. The concert must be of the following in nature: 1) A concert band or jazz band concert, 2) Any orchestra or choral concert, 3) Any other band, vocal, or orchestra of a classic nature, 4) Any musical or opera.  If the concert does not meet the above criteria, then special permission from the teacher must be granted.

Music Responsibility –

Students will have in their possession approximately $40 worth of music each trimester, over the entire year (at no cost to them).  It is imperative that all music is taken care of and returned at the end of each concert.  A music folder is provided for every music student.  All folders should be stored in the folder cabinet.  If excessive damage or the music is lost, students will be held financially responsible.

Instrument Responsibility -

Musical instruments are an expensive responsibility.  If you borrow an instrument it is your responsibility to treat that instrument as if it were your own.  Instrument insurance is required for all school owned instruments, including percussion.  The insurance rate is a flat rate of $50 and has a $50 deductible in case of loss or theft.  The insurance does not cover repairs to the instrument.  The cost of the repair is the student/parent’s responsibility.  These instruments are available through the school: alto clarinet, bass clarinet, tenor saxophone, bari saxophone, french horn, trombone, baritone and tuba.

Beginning Instrumental Students –

All beginning students will have the chance to try out every instrument available.  We use a system of identifying students whose physical features specifically fit one kind of instrument or another.  This system will, hopefully, help us find the perfect instrument for your student to insure that they will succeed on that instrument! Not every student will succeed on every instrument.  Differing physical characteristics will make some instruments easier for you than others.

Website –

The Music Department Website is constantly being updated.  Please check it periodically for

performance dates.  It also contains department information that you may need throughout the year.  Please visit the website frequently for updates.

                - As a member of a performing group, you have a special talent and will be able to use that talent for the rest of your life.  Bands, choirs and orchestras are built not only around individual talent, but the concept of giving and sharing within the group.  We want to become the best that we can be.  It is our desire to maintain a high standard of excellence and reputation.  Every member needs to personally strive for excellence by following the policies and procedures and making a conscious effort to do the best they can do each day.  We will work as hard as you to make this a great year! LET’S GO KNIGHTS!

Thanks so much for your continued support!
